Enabling or Disabling Web Threat Protection

You have several different ways to make Antivirus for Mac start or stop detecting unsafe websites.

To start or stop your protection against web threats:

  • Click the Antivirus for Mac icon near the top right corner of your screen, and then select Detect Web Threats.
  • If you have already opened Antivirus for Mac, click Overview on the left side of the window, and then slide the Detect Web Threats switch ON or OFF.
  • You can also click Web on the left side of the window, and select or deselect Detect Web Threats.

Stopping Web Threats

Trend Micro maintains a database of websites with a poor reputation, ranked according to risk. These sites have a history of transmitting malicious software or supporting online fraud.

Antivirus for Mac can block untrustworthy sites that appear in this database. Exactly how many sites it will block depends on whether you have set the Web Threat Protection slider to Low, Normal or High. Additionally, Antivirus for Mac can display link ratings, so you will know if a link is safe before you click it.

Filtering Websites

Antivirus for Mac can block websites in selected categories. You can use this feature to prevent kids from opening websites inappropriate for children.

Verify that your protection works

Open a web browser and go to http://cnhacker.com. A warning will block the website and announce that it poses a security risk.

Note:

Although recognized as a threat, this website actually poses no risk, so you can use it safely for testing purposes.

Learn how to protect yourself from web threats

  • Stop clicking links in email messages. Rather than clicking a link sent to you, type the website address into your web browser yourself.

  • Beware of poorly-worded email messages that implore you to check a commercial or financial account online.
